Smartphone terms and acronyms

All terms and acronyms are in the context of smartphone technologies at NIU.

1xRTT - 1 times Radio Transmission Technology is a 3G (third generation) protocol that smartphone use to communicate on broadband data networks. Average speeds are between 60 to 80 kbps with bursts up to 144 kbps.

EVDO - Evolution-Data Optimized is a 3G (third generation) protocol that smartphones use to communicate on broadband data networks. It is faster than the 1xRtt data protocol. Average speeds are between 400 and 700 kbps with bursts up to 2mb/sec.

NotifyLink - NotifyLink is the software that ITS uses to synchronize PIM data between your smartphone and GroupWise.

PDA - Personal Digital Assistant; an electronic handheld device that manages PIM data.

PIM - Personal Information Manager. Personal Information includes: calendar, tasks, contacts and e-mail.

Smartphone - A handheld device that combines a cell phone with a PDA.

Wi-Fi - Short for "Wireless Fidelity" Wi-Fi networks are most often called wireless networks. They use access points and usually have a short range (50 ft or so). Most smartphones do NOT have Wi-Fi capabilities. Most smartphones use the data network provided by their cellular carrier. They use technologies such as; EVDO and 1xRTT to communicate on these data networks that are often referred to as broadband networks. Many people confuse Wi-Fi networks with phone data networks since they both provide data over the air.
