GroupWise Retiree Accounts

A Retiree Account includes a GroupWise e-mail account and access to the NIU network. It is available to any employee who is classified as being retired from the University. Initial acounts are free for 1 year after retirement date. Past that, the annual renewal of an account requires membership in the NIU Annuitants Association.

Request a Retiree Account

A request can be made once your paperwork has been processed with the University. This request can be as early as two months before your retirement date.

Complete the online "Computer Access Request" form:

  1. Go to http://www.its.niu.edu/its/apps/car
  2. Under the Classification section select "Retired Faculty/Staff" from the drop-down menu
  3. Do not check any of the boxes under the Service Area section, click on "Continue"
  4. In the box for Additional Information type "Request Retiree Account"
  5. Complete all information in the User Information section and click "Continue"
  6. Review your request to ensure it is accurate and click "Continue"
  7. Your request has now been submitted. You can print a copy for your records

An informational packet will be sent to your home address when the account has been set-up. it will include your new AccountID and how to access your Retiree mailbox off-campus.

Changes - Faculty/Staff Account vs. Retiree Account

  • Mailbox Content: All current mailbox content, which includes mail, appointments, tasks, notes, and address books will transfer from your Faculty/Staff account into your Retiree Account.
  • Access Rights: Proxy access and Resource Mailbox ownership will not transfer to your Retiree Account.
  • Account Status: In the GroupWise Address Book your status under "Department" will change to Retiree.
  • E-Mail Alias: Your Faculty/Staff e-mail alias will automatically be redirected to your new Retiree Account. The actual e-mail address will no longer use your Faculty/Staff AccountID. It will change to your new Retiree AccountID.

Keep Retiree Account Active

Initial accounts are free for 1 year after retirement date. Past that, the annual renewal of an account requires membership in the NIU Annuitants Association.

  • Renewal of your Retiree Account will be on July 1st each year
  • If membership dues are delinquent the mailbox will be expired for 30 days
  • If membership dues remain unpaid at the end of this perion the mailbox and its' contents may be deleted
