Your Student AccountID (Z-ID)
You are assigned a AccountID when you first register at NIU. Your AccountID looks like z954321. This identifier is permanent and identifies you for access to computing and communications services on campus such as:
- Blackboard
- MyNIU
- software applications on file servers
- computers in ITS and ResTech computer labs
- NIU student e-mail
- your network storage space (H: drive)
- printers
- dial-in services
- wireless network connections on the DeKalb campus
All registered students at NIU have an activated e-mail account. Your e-mail address is in the format of Z-ID@students.niu.edu. Look up your e-mail address in the Directory.
Your initial password is your date of birth in YYYYMMDD format. For example, 19820509 would be the initial password for a birth date for May 9, 1982. This is a temporary password. You need to change this password to a permanent password (see below).
Look up your AccountID (Z-ID)
Go to NIU's self-serve AccountID/password service at logonid.niu.edu.
Changing your temporary password to a permanent password - 2 options
- You can change your password anytime, anywhere using password.niu.edu. Go to password.niu.edu and follow the on-screen instructions. password.niu.edu can be used to both change and reset your Novell password (the password associated with your Z-ID).
- Go to any ITS Computer Lab. Log on to any computer. You will be prompted to change your password. Type your new password in the "Enter New Password:" box. Remember - your password must be eight characters long and be a mixture of lowercase letters and numbers. Retype it to confirm. Select OK.
