NIU Password Help
NIU passwords expire every 130 days and are primarily used to access:
- Blackboard
- Novell servers and drives (for example, the f:drive)
- computer labs
- WebCRMA
- student MVS access
- dialing in to NIU's Internet service from off campus
- FTP access to Novell user volumes
- student e-mail (not GroupWise e-mail)
Passwords must follow these rules:
- 8 characters long
- contain a mix of numbers and lowercase letters
- not been used before
Following these rules will ensure that your password is compatible with the NIU systems listed above.

Initial/default passwords:
- Your initial/default password is your birthday in the form of YYYYMMDD (for example, 19730920 for September 20, 1973).
- Change your initial/default password to a permanent one at password.niu.edu.
Changing your password:
If you know your password and want to change it, go to password.niu.edu.
If you have forgotten your password or it has expired:
- If you have set up your two verification questions, go to password.niu.edu.
- Or call 815-753-8100.
